CRAFTS OF KHOJ: Macramé By Harleen Kaur

Khoj supports various home-based creators alongside our city special artisans. These creators pour their souls into their crafts and Khoj salutes their passion. In this Section, we’ll talk you through the various handcrafted artforms and crafts our creators make to help you decorate your home!

Handcrafted with precision, Macramé is a form of textile that uses various knotting and hitching techniques with mounting cords, cotton twine, linen, hemp, jute, leather or yarn. The word ‘Macramé’ comes from a 13th-century Arabic weavers' word ‘migramah’ meaning "fringe". This refers to the decorative fringes on camels and horses, which help, amongst other things, to keep the flies off the animal in the hot desert regions of northern Africa. For a long time, Macramé was crafted by sailors, especially in elaborate or ornamental knotting forms, to cover anything from knife handles to bottles to parts of ships. With such a long History, it’s commendable to see how the art form has managed to remain relevant! Our Creator Roseleen Bahl and Livi Sekhos create beautiful Macramé pieces of art ranging from wall hangings to coasters and even tote bags! Imagine being trendy and sustainable, Plastic can’t relate. Support home-based skilled creators and check out their work in our Creator’s Corner!
